Brave Fencer MusashiIn Square's Brave Fencer Musashi, you play as Musashi, a legendary warrior summoned by Princess Fillet of the Allucaneet Kingdom to help battle the Thirstquencher Empire. You turn out to be not quite what they were expecting, but you're stuck in Allucaneet until you finish the job.
Musashi is armed with two main weapons: Fusion and Lumina. Fusion allows you to absorb abilities from enemies. For example, if you "Assimilate" a Blue Soldier, you'll gain the "Gunshot" technique. Lumina, the other sword, is just a more powerful sword that can, eventually, become bonded with different elements for differect effects.
Fencer is, overall, a good Action/RPG that seems to step on its own toes just when I was enjoying myself too much. The action elements of the game are great, but the role playing aspects just drag the game down.
Some of the problems the game faces are the slipper controls (which become extremely annoying when you're trying to make precise jumps), the passage of time (it sucks to travel to town just to have to wait on a store to open the following afternoon), and Musashi's need to sleep. If he doesn't take a nap here and there, he'll fall asleep right in the middle of combat!
If only Square had forgotten about the passage of time, Musashi's "tiredness" meter, and worked on the controls a little bit more, Musashi would have been a sure hit. It probably doesn't matter anyway, the game shipped with a demo of Final Fantasy 8.
